How do LED reflectors work?

While most light bulbs rely on heat to create light LED bulbs work differently. The bulbs host a number of LEDs (Light Emitting Diodes), which contain a semiconductor that lights up when an electrical current is passed through it.

Although a single LED on its own will generate a small amount of light, individual diodes can be clustered together to illuminate a larger space. LED light bulbs contain a number of LEDs and because these bulbs generate very little heat, they are much more efficient than other types of lighting.

LED reflectors differ from other LED types, incorporating special reflective surfaces designed to provide light in a certain direction. The result can be either;

• a narrow cone of light that's been concentrated - perfect for spotlighting purposes
• a broad beam of light that's more diffused

Reflectors are ideal for ambient or floodlighting purposes.

A range of bulbs

When choosing LED reflectors, the right choice will depend on your personal preferences and the requirements of the light fitting.

For instance, you'll want to choose a bulb that offers the right amount of brightness and a colour temperature that you like - that is an illumination that has a slightly yellow or blue glow.

It's also essential that the bulb chosen has the right connector for the light fixture in question. E27, the screw-shaped base, is a common choice, while E14 LED bulbs, also screw shaped, have a smaller diameter.

In addition, the diameter of the bulb itself will need to be considered.
